Techland Adventures
A downloadable game for Windows
Designer's Note: Game Pad Required! Techland Adventures was designed for an in-person Game Jam at the Melrose Center, Orange County Library System, with the theme being "Social Worker." We were provided with numerous challenges to choose from. The challenge I opted for was "Tech Literacy," addressing challenges certain individuals face when it comes to understanding the usage of technology.
Description: Techland Adventures invites players into a vibrant digital world where Byte, a curious and endearing robot, embarks on a quest for knowledge. In a realm where technology bridges fantasy and reality, Byte seeks to acquire essential digital skills: navigating emails, turning devices on and off, using smartphones, and typing with precision. Each room in the Techland facility offers unique and interactive learning experiences, painted in vivid colors that enhance Byte's journey. Techland Adventures is a fusion of education and entertainment, designed to inspire both boys and girls, as well as tech-illiterate adults, to explore the wonders of technology while forging a brighter, more inclusive future."
Game Jam Judge's Comment: The idea of tech literacy being a key factor of unemployment was cleverly implemented within this game. A puzzle platformer that is able to teach people the concept of emails, typing, and using a smartphone shows the empathy that is needed when helping customers that are unable to access services on a computer. This technically was the only game in the entire GameJam that followed strongly with a scenario that was given. A lot of customers want assistance with services but run into obstacles not being familiar with technology or even how to use their emails on their phones. What is a given to so many of us, it's hard for people not to understand how much that is a struggle for the general population. Many customers will forget their emails passwords, not have access to important accounts, or be unable to figure out how to have a resume readily available online. This game is a good way for people to understand that experience and is also just a fun way to teach someone who is not familiar with a computer or smartphone what basic forms you can utilize
